Calvin will present his new body of works entitled River Series for the November 2007 solo exhibition.

NN Gallery is proud to present a solo exhibition entitled River Series by established watercolourist Calvin Chua. Painted entirely in 2007, this series is comprised of works both in ink and also watercolour on paper.

Calvin is one of the Malaysian Watercolour Organisation (MWO) founding members, and has exhibited his artworks in galleries throughout the region ever since he started painting. Famed for his delightful depictions of the morning glory flower, this latest exhibition proceeds to engage in the human form and experience.

It is his lifestyle and location that has influenced his art. This body of work pays homage to his childhood days spent in Sungai Raga, Yan, Kedah. Calvin revisits this enchanted setting, of waterfalls and pristine lakes set in ancient rocks to admire the charming life and serenity found in nature.

Preferring the natural eco-setting and laid-back lifestyle, Calvin Chua observes the cultural richness that exists amongst the villagers. Expressing the generous spirit of the people and the rustic setting by the river, he paints scenes that revolve around water, such as bathing, fishing, playing, as evocative as the smiles and as pure as the landscape.

His mastery of the medium allows his depictions to move between the gentle ebbs and flows of cascading water, to the reflection of the body in water as well as skillfully capturing the splatters of waters as children playing boisterously in the rivers.

We congratulate Calvin Chua for this wonderful new series, which alludes to the simple delights found in the many hidden treasures in our land. We sincerely hope that this artistic perspective will also give prominence towards more eco-friendly development for the protection and preservation of our life giving rivers.
