NN Gallery proudly presents “ Forms” a touring ceramic exhibition featuring the works of Peter Low H. M , Lee Hsien Chin , Wong Yi Min and Alvin Tan from 6th – 31st October 2007.
This exhibition showcases the versatility of clay and the various glazing techniques used by these potters to create an array of functional and sculptural objects from the traditionally orthodox shapes such as teapots bowls and plates to the quintessentially unconventional in the form of ashtrays, vessels trays and vases, resulting in a concerted effort in turning clay into fanciful artistic expressions.
Min Yue Ceramics Workshop located in Kota Tinggi, Johor is run by accomplished potter Peter Low H.M . Low takes on apprentices from Malaysia, Taiwan and Singapore to nurture in the rich tradition of ceramic art. He adds new use of materials to create innovative art forms to demonstrate the dramatic breath of styles that emerge from emerging young potters.
Peter Low, born in 1943 , graduated from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore and now together with young talents Lee Hsien Chin (b.1972, Taiwan), Wong Yi Min (b.1974, Malaysia) and Alvin Tan (b. 1979, Singapore) will feature a diverse selection of conceptually engaging forms of earthenware and porcelain, that are witty, humble and edgy.
Working in combination with other materials, such as glass bamboo handles and handmade paper, the works take on experimental and painterly approaches, where surfaces become canvases all in all to enhance the textural and malleable quality found in clay.
This exhibition bridges the realm of craft and sculpture where these four artists have successfully found new ways as interpreting ceramic art. The influence of teacher and mentor is evident in many of the works and it is an opportunity to see a liberating re-interpretation of traditional forms.
