NN Gallery is proud to present Queenie Chow’s first solo exhibition entitled “Peek-a-Boo & Bon Bon” from 13th –30th August 2006. The exhibition will showcase works from 2004 - 2006 in oils and acrylic on canvas.
Born in Pahang, Queenie graduated from Lim Kok Wing University College in 1996. In 2000 she and her friends started Salt, an arts and craft design team, specialising in beautiful customised book-binding, hand made soft sculptures and t-shirts. Peek a Boo & Bon Bon is Queenie’s debut exhibition.
Using a charming naïve style, Queenie uses both the bright and playful textural approach as well as a subtler method of minimal palette of stylised flat surface to express the emotions of her childhood years and her love and fascination of cats. Inspired by childhood memories, Queenie’s artworks invites us to reminisce and reflect on our own memories of simple, carefree and innocent childhood days.

Peek-a-Boo is a series of cat paintings in a multitude of feline poses - curled up, poised to jump or simply languishing luxuriously in cosy interiors, with recognisable facial expressions. Bon Bon is equally whimsical and sweet in nature, kindled from her childhood recollections of playing dress up and all things girly and of day dreaming.
Fun and appealing, Queenie’s works are visible interpretations of childhood emotions and activities. Influenced by contemporary Japanese art of manga (comic books) and anime (animation), both Peek-a Bboo & Bon Bon evoke feelings of fearlessness and openness; simplicity and joyfulness, candour and innocence. Although whimsical in nature, this series serves as a subtle reminder for us not to lose track of these qualities.
Also on display for the very first time is a collection of hand painted pebbles by self taught artist Ang Boo Yeong. Yeong paints images of cats and other animal friends on natural and organically shaped stones in a myriad of gazes and grins that are both mischievous and adorable.
