The Childhood Cancer Research Fund (CCRF) of University of Malaya has evolved from being primarily focused on education & training and on improving services via research to also providing funds for poor patients. All funding for projects under the CCRF are obtained from the public and are subject to auditing by the University of Malaya Medical Centre auditors. Donations to CCRF are tax exempt.
The objectives of the UMMC Childhood Cancer Research Fund (CCRF) are:
To promote progress in paediatric oncology research; which will lead to improvement in laboratory services as well as refining therapy.
To promote decentralisation of childhood cancer cases so as to allow patients to be treated at hospitals in their own state instead of just in Klang Valley. This is done through the implementation of a fellowship program in paediatric haematology-oncology for doctors from all around Malaysia.
To provide adequate support in the form of travelling expenses and daily stipend in addition to subsidies for purchasing certain drugs (which are not obtainable for free) to poor patients who need to come to UMMC for phases of their therapy. Failure to complete chemotherapy as scheduled is a common reason why children relapse and lose the opportunity for a complete cure.
In short, the CCRF objectives have evolved from purely research-centric to
encompass other aspects that influence overall treatment success of
childhood cancer patients.
