A book launch of "Cheong Laitong - The sixties" will be held on 16 April 2006 at NN Gallery in conjunction with Laitong's solo exhibition entitled "New Works 2006". The special reception on Sun 16 April 3pm will be officiated by Raja Datuk Fuziah Raja Tun Uda, Member of the Board of Trustees, National Art Gallery.

This exhibition will also commemorate the artists 74th birthday with a new book of his earlier works from the 1960s, highlighting some important works from public and private collections.

Cheong Laitong is without doubt one of the pioneers of abstract expressionism in this country. From his early career, Laitong has continued till today to express his emotions and thoughts onto his abstract canvasses.

In his latest works we see a style that has evolved through the decades. This series sees his signature design of gestural calligraphic lines, primary colours and spatial quality rendered with great abandon.

Incorporating his unique blend of contemporary concerns with the strict codes of classical Chinese brush paintings, Laitong still manages to evoke a balanced harmony of form, colour and line.

Elements of oriental mysticism and tranquility as well as dynamic and gestural movements alluding to the ethereal qualities of nature are encapsulated in this exciting collection of work.

This award-winning artist has yet again maintained true to his art. A master of abstraction, Cheong Laitong’s new body of work will certainly stimulate a powerful and new visual experience.
