Ilse Noor’s art stems from the classical training in the art of intaglio, and especially her love for etching. In depicting a glorified mystical reality her works are charged with an emotionally involved semi-autobiographical look at her journey past present and future in the realm of South East Asia and its rich cultural heritage, rituals and animist traditions.
Ilse Noor’s latest offering Irama Samudra springs a charming new aspect of her whimsical nature. In this series, we see the frog holding court perched on Corinthian columns, in a myriad of expressions. Jovial and witty, regal and iconic the frog plays the various percussions of the gamelan.

Following the movements and rhythms of the music as beguiling as the sound of water, the works are a reflection of Ilse Noor’s remarkable journey, achievement and development in the Malaysian art world. She, like her imagery, now sings to the tune of celebration and wonderment. The new works are truly a testament of her poise and position in Malaysian art.
Primitive and ancient, the emotions as evoked in the music and the expression and gumption of the frogs attest to our senses and the quality of life. It is in her precise and thoughtful rendering of the charm of our land, culture and symbols that reminds us that we are constantly surrounded by beauty in every aspect of life’s finer detailing.
