NN Gallery is proud to present the very first solo exhibition by Cheah Yew Saik entitled “A Touch of Nature” on 1st November till 18th December 2004 at NN Gallery. Cheah Yew Saik’s much anticipated solo exhibition will showcase a series of enchanted landscapes in both oils and watercolours.
Born in Kedah in 1939, Cheah Yew Saik studied at the acclaimed Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore before pursuing a National Diploma in Art & Design at Stroke on Kent College in England. Later in 1968 he became the Principal & Founder of the Kuala Lumpur College of Art in Malaysia (KLCA). He was the President of the Malaysia Watercolour Society Society (1983 - 1987) and also the President of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Art Alumni Association in Malaysia (1984 - 1985).
Cheah Yew Saik is indelibly, a fine art educator and administrator who has greatly influenced many of our Malaysian artists studying under his helm. His 35 years at KLCA has long denied him a solo exhibition due to a focused and stealth commitment to nurturing artists who would in turn shape the local art scene.

Cheah Yew Saik himself is an artist well versed in all mediums. He paints in oils and watercolours, works in sculpture and ceramics. His versatility is mirrored in the many different styles he champions. He has since taken part in numerous national and international exhibitions in China, India, Korea, New Zealand, Belgium, Sweden, Brazil, England, Korea and all over South East Asia.
The aptly entitled “A Touch of Nature” exhibition is a declaration of Cheah’s love for nature and the environment. Having travelled the world, sketching mountainous vistas, lush rainforests, as well diverse landscapes, such as padi fields, deserts, rivers and lakes, Cheah returns home to create his very own painted landscape.
His landscapes are meant for quiet contemplation. One is immediately transported into a peaceful existence. His colours are subtle and fresh, and his strokes are slender to the touch. His depiction of such diverse landscapes during the different settings of time and season captures not only the beauty of nature but also the sounds that nature makes. This is indeed a collection of work that presents Cheah Yew Saik at the very pinnacle of his career.
