artist biography

This will be Mohd Raduan Man's first solo exhibition which features works in oil, acrylic and woodprint. The exhibition runs from 4th till the 22nd of May 2003.

A recent graduate of UITM, Shah Alam, Mohd Raduan, has been actively involved in group exhibitions and competitions. He was selected to participate in the Nokia Art Competition in Year 2000 and received the Juror's Award at the Tanjong Heritage Art Competition which was organised by the Malaysian Ministry of Arts and Culture in 2002. Mohd Raduan's colourful works offer insight and amusing snapshots of human character and behaviour using ordinary objects and feline animals as metaphors. Drawing insparation from popular urban culture, Mohd Raduan Man expresses concerns, tension and trials manifested in our urban modern society.

Influenced by local and international artists alike, Mohd. Raduan Man portrays an assimilation of art traditions and cultural sensibilities in his work. As a young artist, governed by youth and popular culture, mixed with influences and experiences of suburban life, Mohd. Raduan grapples with the complexities, the angst and issues of acceptance and tolerance in his work. Common everyday objects are symbolised in his works. Images of half empty cups, cats and dogs are signs of the continuous struggle of the young artist. Cats are portrayed as solitary, strays in search of food whilst the dog, which is often alert and on guard, in contrast, alludes to the menacing forces and battles that lie ahead. Half empty cups measures another natural response expressed by many a parched artist. These metaphors are just a few examples of the characteristic and fresh markings of this young talent.
