After a successful debut solo exhibition, Alex returns to NN Gallery with yet another stunning collection of watercolours. His continued focus on wild flowers sees finer detailing and a more manicured landscape showing his deep respect for nature. Greens of the foliage, the yellows of the sun and white to symbolise the essential water now govern his palette.
In his travels around the world, especially his walks around the fields of New Zealand, Alex captures the abundance of wild and surreal blooms, such as the wild carrot and other uniquely shaped shrubs, in the most glorified manner. Usual depictions of enchanted gardens take us by and large to a place far away. Alex’s works however does not dislocate us from nature but rather promotes an appreciation for our environment, imbuing and instilling in us a sense of tranquillity and balance.

His sensual approach in his depiction of these flowers sees many romantic elements. Not only in his strong command of colour harmonies but also in composition. Alex’s understanding and time spent studying these flowers show dramatic imagery unseen in many other portrayals of flowers in watercolours. The flowers are seen dancing in the wind, or even as majestic in our ecosystem, which in turn allows us to take a closer view of his world of blooms.
Alex’s recent collection of works, which have taken him three years to complete, is a reflection of Alex’s soul. He depicts these objects of beauty with inner calm and freshness that awakens the senses to a greater awareness of one’s environment.
