Fong Kim Sing was born in 1949 in Kedah. He has long been a keen advocator of the arts in the Northern State of Malaysia. Self taught, with three decades of experience as an artist, Fong Kim Sing’s joyous journey in the art world culminates in this celebratory exhibition which also marks his 52nd Birthday.
Fong Kim Sing continues with his ideals in celebrating the simple and natural beauty that lies all around us. This particular series requires Kim Sing to travel to remote areas throughout Malaysia in search of these delicate flowers. During the month of August these flowers bloom wild in areas of Kuala Kedah and Bukit Painding, Ipoh where Kim Sing spends much of his time painting.

His most recent endeavour paints a whimsical picture of nature at its best. His focus on butterflies and lotuses sees a return to romanticism, where one sees his interpretation of butterflies in flight, sweeping gracefully against the canvasses, an appreciation of Mother Nature. These semi abstract canvasses see a playful hide and seek juxtaposition of fanciful butterflies set amidst lush flora and fauna.
He uses a range of pastels to convey the soft willowy-ness of his subject matter. In the horizon we see scenes from dawn till dusk allowing for an array of mystic and romantic washes of colours in the background. White is often used to express the lotus image, (though they come in shades of pinks, red, blues and yellow) and symbolises purity, as traditionally depicted in many religions, beliefs and customs.
This exhibition sees an extension of Fong Kim Sing’s affair with nature. Starting from the Misty Morning Series in the eighties, Kim Sing has since incorporated the richness and unearthed beauty of nature into his artworks. His collection of rocks and his scenic paintings of birds, mountains and old boats have all come together to convey the venerable link between Man and Nature.
