NN Gallery is proud
and honoured to present this three man exhibition entitled
"The Art of
Painting" featuring recent works by three prominent Malaysian
artists Chung Chen Sun, Cheong Laitong and Jolly Koh showing new
works on paper, oils on canvas and Chinese brush paintings.
The Art of
Painting will highlight three very significant artists in
Malaysian art history who have left an indelible mark in art. Each
of the three artists' express unique styles of painting and their
latest works express a new and exciting language to their
technique and an interesting treatment of their subject matter.
The works in this collection shows highly expressive use of
spatial elements, stokes and colour.
Chung Chen Sun is
a highly noted and influential Chinese ink painter and one of the
few remaining artists from the Nanyang Academy of Art. With a
strong view of Chinese tradition and sensibilities, his works are
governed by tensions between the traditional and modem. He
combines strong strokes coupled with soft touches to create a continuous
balance and a contemporary sensitivity. His new works also portray
blends of different juxtapositioning of textures and colours, and
of space and perspectives, as seen in Yin Yang and Tao. Chung
Chen Sun's ideas in his latest works reveal a new dimension,
showing the dynamism and explosive nature of Chinese brush
painting.

Jolly Koh's
approach to art is that of a purist. He is an accomplished
colourist and a strong advocator of aesthetics in the local art
scene. His works draw inspiration from "nature and the
unconscious to great artists of the past". In his latest
works, one sees the combination of harmonious and contrasting
tonal qualities that evoke a style that is romantic and serene, as
seen in The Rising Sun, The Moon and an Egg, Jolly seems to
be painting a personal landscape taking the viewer on a journey
through layerings of subtle and wonderful hues whilst meandering
in and out of exciting forms and shapes. Jolly's works undeniably
possess a quality that readily assumes for a quiet moment.
Cheong Laitong's
bold use of primary colours, sees new emerging forms, design and
patterning in his latest works. Laitong notes that his latest
works are windows into his psyche exploring "the unconscious
in awe of the vibrancy of life". His painted canvasses depict
vigorous, free and energetic renderings of swirls and strokes with
emphasis on the palette, working on the intensity of reds, blues
and yellows. The struggle of form, colour and spirit mounts to a
remarkable visual feast where new arresting icons unfold and
unexpected colour combinations meet. In his recent series entitled
Rockform, Laitong reveals that he found washed rocks on the
shores of Langkawi to be the source of inspiration. "The
rocks themselves have a beautiful patterning from years of
erosion. They already possess a natural appeal I am simply trying
to capture the experience".
