In tune with the
dramaturgy , sounds and movements of the Chinese opera
Zheng Yuande captures in his art the understanding of depth colour
form , line . contour and physiognomy that are staged with care in
this performance art. His reasons for choosing the Chinese Opera
as his subject matter is because of the manifestation of all
things separate and finally coming together to present an
harmonious unity . This is indeed the position he takes when
examining his art . He continuously requestions the reasons for
the denouement . often asking whether the finale is ever the final
act. This impression is inherent in his recent glimpses of the
Chinese opera.
His quest as a
painter coupled with his engaging curiosity for things around him
takes him on a constant and ever-changing journey In his
"over lapping "style seen in his charcoal drawings shows
his preoccupation with discovering and rediscovering forms to
attune to the idea that things can always be seen in a changing
light . His drawings just like the opera . uses the play of light
and shadows to allow for contemplation as well as concentration .
The juxtapositioning of light and dark tones using layering upon
layering of vigorous and spontaneous strokes yield an expressive
figurative mode . " with the hand that coordinated to
register a thousand "takes", it's multitudinous marks
often break free of shapes to become abstract vectors forming webs
of optical sensation

"Whatever
mistakes made is forgivable in art . " explains Yuande when
considering the very nature of drawing . Natural and implusive .
'The deliberate imperfections in his drawings , the repeated
strokes upon the face and body and conscious rendering of the void
by rubbing out sporadically , draws back to the melange of
emotions he faces while he draws. He talks about the analogy
between his drawings and the musicians and actors . During the
performance shortcomings are sometimes unforeseen Similarly the
subconscious does not always translate itself clearly on paper.
His oil paintings
however take on a contrasting sensibility to that of his drawings
. There is a deeper awareness and attention given to detailing and
embellishment of operatic paraphernalia and regalia The canvases
express a mediative quality that embraces the exoticism of Eastern
traditions . The figures are absorbed into the background . 'The
resplendent colours enmesh into luminous mellow silken hues. The
paintings are silent -"it come from the eye and addresses
itself to the eye ." It is only through intimate
contemplation that beckons the eve into the lively realm of
Yuande's prodigious compositions.
The sensation and
experience generated from Yuande's charcoal drawings and oil
paintings are as opposed as chalk and cheese. However they share a
common language that provides us with an endearing and thoughtful
insight into he drama of the Chinese opera.
