It is with great pleasure that we welcome back Eston Tan for his seventh solo exhibition entitled “Down to Earth ” – a collection of oil paintings developed from his earlier studies and sketches from his drawing exhibition at NN Gallery last year.
Born in Penang and a graduate in Fine Arts from the Malaysian Institute of Art, Eston Tan is a bright young talent. With successful solo exhibitions in Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Taiwan and in Hong Kong , Eston Tan continues to capture the hearts of his audiences with gentle and romantic landscapes.
In 2004 we held his first solo exhibition “Thoughts on Life” in aid of the Yellow House, a charitable organisation in support of under-privileged children. Eston was then teaching art to the children and was deeply connected to the cause.

The debut solo exhibition featured Eston’s impressionist paintings in oils, watercolours, and drawings in charcoal that celebrated nature and humanity. The work showed a reflection of rural life, slower paced yet inherently rooted in our sensibilities and consciousness.
His latest works for the exhibition “Down to Earth” mark a stylistic growth. We see a collection of works that see the landscape change in colours from day to night. The romanticism of fishing villages, idyllic kampung houses, mother and child portraits, charming street life of vendors and hawker stalls are intently painted capturing the charm, nostalgia and the simplicity of life.
The outstanding large scale panoramic paintings of cities and towns at night, like all his works, are painted expressively, consciously attentive of the push and release of his strokes, creating an atmospheric and dramatic results – arresting one’s senses at our beautiful skyline. As a finishing touch, the works are flickered in splashes of twinkling colours that completes the compositions with an air of delightful whimsy and starry spirit.
“Down to Earth” features 41 paintings and the exhibition will run from 1st till 31st May 2009.
